About Sinequan (doxepin)

Sinequan belongs to a class of drugs called tricyclic antidepressants, which affect the balance of certain chemicals (neurotransmitters) in the brain.

Sinequan is used to treat depression and anxiety. Sinequan is available only by prescription. It is also available in a generic formulation known as doxepin.

Sinequan may be prescribed as an oral capsule or oral concentrate. It’s always important to follow the specific instructions on your prescription, as they can vary based on the formulation and dosage prescribed.

If you're prescribed Sinequan, be sure to complete the full course of the tricyclic antidepressant unless your doctor specifically tells you to stop. If you don’t complete your prescription, the tricyclic antidepressant may not fully treat your depression or anxiety.

Sinequan uses

There are several FDA-approved uses for Sinequan, but it may also be used off-label to treat other conditions. Your online physician may prescribe it for any of the following common reasons. It’s also possible that healthcare professionals may prescribe it for other reasons not listed here. If you have questions about why a medication is prescribed, ask your online doctor or pharmacist.

  • Depression and anxiety

Sinequan is FDA-approved to treat depression and/or anxiety.

Sinequan may also be prescribed to treat psychotic depressive disorders with associated anxiety, including manic-depressive disorders. Sinequan may be prescribed off-label to treat insomnia or another mental illness.

Sinequan side effects

  • The side effects associated with taking Sinequan are typically mild. Most Sinequan side effects are associated with tiredness. Sinequan has some common side effects. They may include:

    • Feeling dizzy, tired, or weak

    • Stomach pain, nausea, and diarrhea

    • Dry mouth

Other side effects, which are less common but might be more severe, could include:

    • Unusual bruising or bleeding

    • Worsening depression or anxiety

    • Fever, chills, or sore throat

You should call your doctor if you notice any of these side effects, or if you develop any other symptoms. Sinequan may be prescribed to treat insomnia in pediatric patients over 12 years of age.

How to take Sinequan

Your pharmacist will provide you with instructions on how to take your Sinequan prescription. Be sure to read your prescription label and follow the instructions. Call your doctor or pharmacy if you have any questions.

Sinequan can come in different forms and doses, so be sure to follow the specific instructions on your prescription. The starting dose of doxepin hydrochloride is typically 75 mg taken once daily. Take doxepin at bedtime if you're taking the medication once a day.

What to avoid while taking Sinequan

Sinequan has 661 drug interactions. Don’t change what you are taking without checking with your doctor or pharmacist. That includes other medications or supplements, as well as over-the-counter drugs.

Possible drug interactions with Sinequan include:

  • Other medications for depression or Parkinson's disease, such as isocarboxazid, phenelzine, and tranylcypromine

  • Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or MAO inhibitors

  • Adderall (amphetamine/dextroamphetamine)

  • Neurontin (gabapentin)

  • Xanax (alprazolam)

Ask your doctor for medical advice about side effects before drinking alcohol. Drinking alcohol while taking doxepin can increase your risk of uneven heartbeats, extreme drowsiness, and other adverse side effects.

Avoid stopping doxepin without your doctor's advice. Stopping your medication can cause withdrawal symptoms.

Medication alternatives to Sinequan

If your healthcare provider prefers to put you on another treatment altogether, they may suggest other tricyclic antidepressants or antidepressant drugs in another drug class. Here are some common doctor-recommended alternatives based on your health issue:
