Ubrelvy prescription FAQs

  • What is Ubrelvy used for?

Ubrelvy is used to help treat migraine attacks. This is not a long-term treatment solution in most cases, as doctors may also recommend the use of a medication that can prevent migraines. The preventative medication may help to reduce the overall occurrence of migraines over time. This can reduce the need for Ubrelvy to treat acute migraine attacks. The medication can be used with migraines that cause an aura.

  • How does Ubrelvy work?

Ubrelvy works by reducing the activity of certain proteins in the body. This certain natural substance has been found to play a role in the development of migraines. Ubrelvy will block the activity of the substance for a short period of time. This helps to provide relief of the headache pain for a while, at least to the point where the reaction leading to migraine has passed.

  • How much does Ubrelvy cost?

No fixed costs are available for Ubrelvy, particularly due to the fact that there are multiple elements that affect the pricing of this medication. The number of tablets that the doctor prescribed will also play a role in determining how much you will pay for the medication. It is possible that your health insurance would cover most of the cost of the medication, depending on your plan.

  • How often can you take Ubrelvy?

The maximum recommended dose for Ubrelvy in a 24-hour period is 200 mg, but most people are advised to take much less than this to help manage their migraines. An adult with mild to moderate migraines may be provided with a 50 mg tablet per day. They should only take the medication when they feel a migraine developing. Some people may be provided with a 100 mg dose of the medication if they have more severe migraines. When the first dose of the medication does not provide full relief or the migraine comes back afterward, the patient may take a last dose 2 hours after the first tablet they took. The patient should not take more than these two doses in total per day.

  • How long does Ubrelvy take to work?

While Ubrelvy works for acute migraines, it is important to note that it will not produce its full effects immediately. Most people will only start to feel a reduction in their pain symptoms after approximately one and a half hours. It can, however, take up to two hours for the medication to work in some cases. The capsule reaches its peak performance after three hours and remains present for approximately five hours in total.

  • What are the side effects of Ubrelvy?

The main side effect that people experience when they take Ubrelvy is sleepiness. Once the pill starts to work, the person may feel tired and sleepy. Some people also complain about feeling dizzy a while after they take the tablet. These side effects can lead to hazards if you decide to drive or if you need to operate certain types of machinery after you take the capsule.

  • How long does Ubrelvy last?

The medication generally reaches its peak effect in the third hour after administration. The medication then works for about five hours at its maximum efficacy. This means each dose of the drug lasts for around eight hours.

  • How much does Ubrelvy cost without insurance?

If your insurance does not cover the cost of the medication, you will need to consult with a pharmacy to determine the costs on your side. The prices can differ among various pharmacies. This is why some people may prefer calling around to find out which pharmacy has the best price for the drug.

  • What can you not take with Ubrelvy?

Do not combine Ubrelvy with certain antibiotics, HIV medications, antidepressants, and other drugs that can cause interactions. You should also avoid alcohol, as it has been found that alcohol increases the side effects of Ubrelvy and may lead to more severe migraines.

About Ubrelvy (ubrogepant)

Ubrelvy is considered a calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) antagonist, which functions by blocking the activity of proteins that are known to contribute to migraine attacks. These proteins are called calcitonin gene-related peptides, or simply CGRP. Ubrelvy is ineffective against the prevention of migraine attacks because it will not have any long term effectsYou will usually take the medication when you have a migraine attack. The medication also works for aura, which is a bothersome migraine associated symptom.

Ubrelvy is known to treat acute migraine attacks. Ubrelvy is available only by prescription. Ubrogepant is the primary ingredient that is used in the formulation of this acute migraine attack medicine. The medication is currently not available in a generic form and only sold under the brand name Ubrelvy.

Ubrelvy may be prescribed as a capsule only. It’s always important to follow the specific instructions on your prescription, as they can vary based on the formulation and dosage you are prescribed.

There is no ideal dosage regimen for Ubrelvy. This is because Ubrelvy works as an acute treatment for a migraine headache. The patient information leaflet usually states that the drug should be taken when the patient feels symptoms of migraine attacks surfacing. The patient may be provided with a low initial dose of the migraine pain medication.

The medication works on certain natural substances in the body in order to reduce the symptoms of migraine pain. The medication is generally not advised for regular headache pain, but only in cases where people have been confirmed to suffer from a migraine headache.

Ubrelvy uses

There is one FDA-approved use for Ubrelvy, but it may also be used to treat other conditions. Your online medical professional may prescribe it for familiar reasons. Your healthcare provider may prescribe it for different reasons not listed here. Ask your online doctor or pharmacist about why a medication is prescribed.

  • Migraine headaches

A migraine is described as an intense or severe headache. There are certain diagnostic criteria that doctors need to take into consideration when they want to determine if the patient experiences migraine headaches. Treatment of migraine attacks generally involves assessing the patient's condition and ensuring there are no underlying medical problems that cause these acute events.

Ubrelvy is a highly effective option for people who have regular migraines. Clinical studies found that the medication helps individuals have pain freedom when they take the drug for acute attacks.

Different doses are available. A healthcare provider will prescribe a 50 mg or 100 mg dose based on the severity of the patient's condition. In most cases, the healthcare provider will also consider the potential benefits that Ubrelvy can produce compared to the adverse events that could occur.

Ubrelvy side effects

  • The side effects of taking Ubrelvy are typically mild to moderate. It is important to note that there are several factors that can affect the risk of adverse events. Your age, health status, the dose of the medication you take, and other drugs that you also take with Ubrelvy can all affect the risks and side effect profile of the medication. Ubrelvy has some common side effects. They may include:

    • Feeling sleepy

    • Dizziness

    • Dry mouth

    • Nausea

Other side effects, which are less common but might be more severe, could include:

    • Severe sleepiness, which could interfere with your ability to drive or operate certain machinery

    • Dizziness, which can become serious to the point where it affects your daily activities

You should call your doctor if you notice any of these side effects or if you develop any other new or concerning symptoms. You can also tell your doctor if sleepiness or dizziness interferes with your daily routine. Your healthcare provider may suggest certain actions to reduce these effects or switch you to a different medication. In some cases, lowering the dose from 100 mg to 50 mg may also reduce these side effects that you experience.

There is no evidence regarding the efficacy or safety of this medication among children. Thus, pediatric patients should not be provided medication that affects their CGRP receptors.

Apart from these, there are other serious adverse events that can occur. This includes the development of an allergic reaction. In this case, hives, swelling, and trouble breathing may occur. Patients need to be on the lookout for these symptoms while they take the medications. If you experience these symptoms, seek emergency medical attention immediately.

How to take Ubrelvy

Your pharmacist will provide you with instructions on how to take your Ubrelvy prescription.

Be sure to read your prescription label and follow the instructions. Call your doctor or pharmacy if you have any questions. Your doctor can also advise about side effects that you should look out for and help you determine if the medication could potentially lead to an allergic reaction.

Take the medication only as you need to. Do not take a second tablet if the first dose does not seem to work unless your doctor specifically advises you to. You should also wait at least 2 hours before taking some other drugs that you use.

Your doctor may tell you the maximum dose that you may take in a single day. Make sure you follow these directions provided by your healthcare provider. You may experience more sleepiness and dizziness when you take a 100 mg capsule compared to a lower 50 mg dose.

Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice when you take this medication.

What to avoid while taking Ubrelvy

Ubrelvy has a large number of drug interactions. Don’t change what you are taking without checking with your doctor or pharmacist. That includes other medications or supplements, as well as over-the-counter drugs.

Some of the drug interactions that may occur while you take Ubrelvy:

  • Antifungal drugs

  • Ciprofloxacin and some other antibiotics

  • Blood pressure medication

  • Fluvoxamine, a type of antidepressant

  • Cyclosporine, an immunosuppressant

  • Some drugs used to treat HIV

If you use Ubrelvy with rifampin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, or barbiturates, these drugs can also cause a certain drug interaction. In this case, the drug interaction can cause Ubrelvy to have a lower effect in the body compared to using it without these medications. The other medicines you should mention to your healthcare provider include prescription drugs.

It is important to tell your doctor about all other medicines you use when taking Ubrelvy. When taking ubrogepant, note that herbal products can also interfere with the functions of the medication. Some herbal products may interfere with the medication's ability to do its job.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist if it is acceptable to consume alcohol while taking Ubrelvy.

Some research shows that regular alcohol consumption may cause migraine symptoms to become aggravated. Alcohol may also reduce the medication’s ability to do its job, making it harder to provide acute treatment for these medical problems. There are also clinical studies that have shown alcohol combined with Ubrelvy may increase the side effects of the medication that the patient experiences. You may experience excessive tiredness, nausea, and dry mouth with this combination.

Medication alternatives to Ubrelvy

If your healthcare provider prefers to put you on another treatment, they may suggest another CGRP antagonist or a migraine medication in another drug class.
