Phexxi prescription FAQs

  • How much does Phexxi cost?

The cost of Phexxi can vary depending on several factors, including insurance coverage and which pharmacy you use. The best way to determine the cost of Phexxi is to ask your pharmacist, who can help you determine the price based on your level of insurance coverage.

  • How can I refill my Phexxi prescription?

Phexxi is only available by prescription, so you will need to see a board-certified doctor to get a refill on your prescription. To get started, book a virtual appointment with one of our top rated board-certified doctors. After a qualifying evaluation, your prescription will be sent to your local pharmacy for pickup.

  • How often can you use Phexxi?

Phexxi is designed to be used before each instance of vaginal sex, up to a maximum of one dose per 24-hour period. Using Phexxi more frequently than recommended may increase the risk of side effects and decrease its effectiveness in preventing pregnancy.

  • Does Phexxi cause yeast infections?

There is a possibility that Phexxi may increase the risk of developing a yeast infection, although it is not a common side effect. In clinical trials, the incidence of yeast infections was similar between those who used Phexxi and those who used the placebo.

However, it is important to note that Phexxi works by maintaining vaginal pH within a range that is inhospitable to sperm, and this can alter the balance of bacteria and yeast in the vagina. This change in pH could potentially increase the risk of developing a yeast infection, although this risk is generally low.

If you experience symptoms of a yeast infection, such as itching, burning, or discharge, while using Phexxi, you should contact your healthcare provider. They can help determine the cause of your symptoms and recommend appropriate treatment. It is also important to note that if you have a history of recurrent yeast infections, you may want to discuss alternative contraceptive options with your healthcare provider.

  • Does Phexxi have taste?

Yes, Phexxi has a very tart taste due to its acidic formula that includes lactic acid, citric acid, and potassium bitartrate.

  • Can you use Phexxi with the pill?

Yes, Phexxi can be used in combination with birth control pills for added protection against pregnancy. However, it is important to note that Phexxi is not a form of hormonal birth control and does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Using multiple forms of contraception, such as Phexxi and the birth control pill, can provide added protection against unintended pregnancy. However, it is important to discuss any concerns or questions about contraception with your healthcare provider to determine the most appropriate and effective method for your individual needs.

  • Who should not take Phexxi?

Phexxi is a non-hormonal contraceptive gel that is FDA-approved for use in individuals who are of reproductive age and at risk of pregnancy. However, there are certain groups of people who should not use Phexxi:

    • Individuals who are pregnant or think they may be pregnant should not use Phexxi.

    • Individuals with a history of recurrent urinary tract infections, bladder infections or other urinary tract issues may want to discuss alternative contraceptive options with their healthcare provider.

    • Individuals with a history of recurrent bacterial vaginosis (BV) may want to discuss alternative contraceptive options with their healthcare provider.

    • Individuals with known hypersensitivity to any component of Phexxi should not use it.

Before using Phexxi, it is essential to discuss your medical history and any current medications you are taking with your healthcare provider to determine if this form of contraception is safe and appropriate for you.

  • What happens if I miss a dose of Phexxi?

Unlike hormonal birth control methods, Phexxi is not taken on a daily basis. Instead, it is used only when needed, specifically before each episode of vaginal intercourse. Therefore, there is no need to worry about missing a dose of Phexxi.

However, it is important to note that Phexxi must be used every time before sexual activity in order to be effective at preventing pregnancy. If you have unprotected sex or do not use Phexxi as directed, there is a risk of unintended pregnancy.

  • What happens if I take too much Phexxi?

Taking too much Phexxi may result in an overdose, which can cause serious side effects. Currently, there is little information on the effects of an overdose of Phexxi. However, if you suspect that you or someone else has taken too much Phexxi, seek emergency medical attention or call your local poison control center immediately.

About Phexxi

Phexxi is a non-hormonal birth control, which functions by maintaining vaginal pH at a level which reduces sperm motility. Phexxi consists of lactic acid, citric acid, and potassium bitartrate. Like any contraceptive this medication can only be used for pregnancy prevention. It is ineffective against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Phexxi is available only by prescription. It is only available as a brand-name medication and does not have a generic formulation.

Phexxi is prescribed as a vaginal gel. It’s always important to follow the specific instructions on your prescription medication.

If you are prescribed Phexxi, be sure to take the medication consistently as directed. Otherwise, the non-hormonal contraceptive gel may not fully protect against pregnancy.

Phexxi uses

Phexxi is only FDA-approved to prevent pregnancy. If you have questions about why a medication is prescribed, ask your online doctor or pharmacist.

  • Pregnancy prevention

Phexxi is a vaginal gel that is used up to an hour before penis-in-vagina sex as a birth control method. It works by maintaining the acidity of the vagina and reducing the mobility of sperm, making it harder for them to fertilize an egg.

Phexxi side effects

  • Like any medication, Phexxi may cause side effects in some individuals. Most Phexxi side effects are associated with vaginal discomfort. The most common side effects reported in clinical trials included:

    • Vaginal burning

    • Vaginal itching

    • Vaginal discharge

    • Vaginal pain

Other possible side effects, which are less common but might be more severe, could include:

    • Urinary tract infection

    • Vaginal yeast infection

    • Bacterial vaginosis

If you experience any serious side effects, including those of a severe allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, and hives, it is important to seek medical attention immediately, as it could be a medical emergency.

How to take Phexxi

Your pharmacist will provide you with instructions on how to take your Phexxi prescription.

Be sure to read your prescription label and follow the instructions. Call your doctor or pharmacy if you have any questions.

Phexxi is a non-hormonal, on-demand contraceptive gel that is inserted in the vagina before each episode of vaginal sex. Instructions may include:

  • Wash your hands before handling the applicator and gel.

  • Remove the applicator from the wrapper and hold it with the wider end up.

  • Shake the gel down into the wider end of the applicator.

  • Lie on your back with your knees bent and gently insert the applicator into your vagina as far as it will comfortably go.

  • Push the plunger all the way in to deposit the gel into your vagina.

  • Remove the applicator and dispose of it in the trash.

  • Wash your hands again.

It is important to use Phexxi before each episode of vaginal sex, up to a maximum of one dose per 24-hour period. The gel should be used as close to the time of intercourse as possible, but no more than an hour before.

It is also important to note that Phexxi does not protect against sexually transmitted infections, so it is recommended to use condoms or other forms of barrier protection in addition to Phexxi to reduce the risk of STIs.

What to avoid while taking Phexxi

There are currently no known drug interactions with Phexxi. However, it is important to always inform your healthcare provider about all the medications, vitamins, and supplements you are taking to ensure the safe and effective use of Phexxi. This includes over-the-counter medications, prescription medications, and herbal products.

It is also important to note that certain medications or products, such as vaginal douches, may affect the pH of the vagina and could potentially decrease the effectiveness of Phexxi. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid using these products while using Phexxi.

If you have any concerns or questions about drug interactions with Phexxi, it is best to consult with your healthcare provider or pharmacist. Don’t change what you are taking without checking with your doctor or pharmacist. That includes other medications or supplements, as well as over-the-counter drugs.

Medication alternatives to Phexxi

If your healthcare provider prefers to put you on another treatment altogether, they may suggest another non hormonal birth control or a birth control in another drug class. Here are some common doctor-recommended alternatives based on your health issue.
