About Klor-Con (potassium chloride)

Klor-Con (potassium chloride) is considered an electrolyte, which is a mineral medication used to treat low potassium levels in the blood. It works to bring those potassium levels up to normal range. This is important because potassium plays a key role in the kidneys, heart, and muscles, as well as in nerve health.

Some conditions that Klor-Con is known to treat include hypokalemia. Klor-Con is available only by prescription. It is available in a generic formulation as well as under different brand names, including KDur, Slow K, Kaon Cl10, KCl.

Klor-Con may be prescribed in the following forms: capsules, tablets, or injectable solution. It’s always important to follow the specific instructions on your prescription, as they can vary based on the formulation and dosage that you are prescribed.

If you are prescribed Klor-Con, be sure to complete the full course of the electrolyte unless your doctor specifically tells you to stop.

If you don’t complete your prescription, the electrolyte may not fully treat your hypokalemia.

Klor-Con uses

There are many FDA-approved uses for Klor-Con, but it may also be used off-label to treat other conditions. Your online medical professional may prescribe it for any of the following common reasons. It’s also possible that your health care provider may prescribe it for other reasons not listed here. If you have questions about why a medication is prescribed, ask your online doctor or pharmacist.

  • Hypokalemia (low potassium)

Hypokalemia is a condition in which there is low level of potassium in your blood. Potassium is an essential mineral in your body that plays a role in normal functioning of muscles, the heart, and the digestive system.

A normal person can absorb enough potassium through usual dietary potassium intake and achieve normal potassium levels. However, there are conditions that can stop potassium retention and severely lower a person's potassium level even with usual dietary intake. Some of these conditions include severe vomiting and diarrhea, hormone issues, or effects of long term treatment with diuretics. In these cases, potassium supplements can be helpful.

How to take Klor-Con

Your pharmacist will provide you with instructions on how to take your Klor-Con prescription.

Be sure to read your prescription label and follow the instructions. Call your doctor or pharmacy if you have any questions.

Klor-Con is either used to treat low potassium levels or used to prevent low potassium in those who have conditions that can lower the amount of potassium in your blood.

Klor-Con may be prescribed for those with severe vomiting and diarrhea or hyperaldosteronism, which is when the adrenal glands release too much aldosterone.

Klor-Con may be prescribed as capsules, tablets, or injectable potassium chloride solution. In solid oral dosage forms, Klor-Con is taken by mouth with a meal and water to help prevent an upset stomach. Do not lie down for at least 10 minutes after taking the potassium chloride tablet, and make sure to swallow the medication whole without crushing or chewing the solid oral dosage form.

Klor-Con may also be prescribed as a microcapsule. This allows a person to sprinkle the contents of the capsule into soft food, or powder form (effervescent potassium preparations) that can be mixed with liquid drinks for easier consumption.

The dosage of potassium chloride administered will be determined by your doctor and will be based on whether you are treating hypokalemia or preventing it.

Keep in mind that you have to take Klor-Con regularly in order to experience the benefits of the medication.

If you miss a dose of Klor-Con, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses of Klor-Con at the same time.
