About Trulicity
Trulicity is an injectable diabetes medication that helps control blood sugar levels. Trulicity is used with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It can also help reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events, such as heart attack and stroke, in adults with type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
Trulicity is available only by prescription. It is available in a generic formulation as well as under different brand names, including dulaglutide.
Trulicity may be prescribed as an injection. It’s always important to follow the specific instructions on your prescription, as they can vary based on the formulation and dosage prescribed.
If you're prescribed Trulicity, be sure to complete the full course of the diabetes medication unless your doctor specifically tells you to stop. If you don’t complete your prescription, the prescription medicine may not fully treat your type 2 diabetes.
Trulicity uses
There are several FDA-approved uses for Trulicity, but your healthcare provider may also prescribe it off-label to treat other medical conditions.
Your PlushCare doctor may prescribe Trulicity for any of the following reasons, or other reasons not listed here. If you have questions about why a medication is prescribed, ask your online doctor or pharmacist.
Type 2 diabetes
Trulicity is FDA-approved as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is not recommended for adults with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
Cardiovascular risk reduction
Trulicity is FDA-approved to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events in adults with type 2 diabetes who have heart disease or multiple cardiovascular risk factors.
Trulicity side effects
The side effects associated with taking Trulicity are typically mild. Most Trulicity side effects are associated with gastrointestinal discomfort.
Trulicity has some common side effects. They may include:Nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain
Decreased appetite
Other side effects, which are less common but might be more severe, could include:Low blood sugar
Severe pain in your upper stomach spreading to your back

Tell your doctor if you notice any of these side effects, or if you develop any other new or concerning symptoms. The use of Trulicity in children under age 18 is not recommended.
How to take Trulicity
Your pharmacist will provide you with instructions on how to take your Trulicity prescription. Be sure to read your prescription label and follow the instructions. Call your doctor or pharmacy if you have any questions.
Trulicity can come in different doses, so be sure to follow the specific instructions on your prescription. The initial dose is typically 0.75 mg subcutaneously for once-weekly Trulicity. Your dose may be increased in 1.5 mg increments for additional blood sugar control.
Use Trulicity on the same day each week at the same time of day. Inject Trulicity under the skin of your stomach, thigh, or upper arm. If you change your dosing day, allow at least three days to pass between doses. You can take your Trulicity pen with or without food.
