What Is Allegra (Fexofenadine) ?

Allegra, the brand name of fexofenadine, is an antihistamine used to treat symptoms of hay fever and other seasonal allergies. It is an over the counter medication that helps reduce the effects of a natural chemical produced by your body called histamine. Histamine causes allergic symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, itchiness, and watery eyes.

Allegra works for both adults and children. This medication is also used to treat hives and itchy skin caused by chronic idiopathic urticaria.

How Does Allegra Work?

Allegra works by blocking a histamine receptor known as an H1 receptor. It may cause less drowsiness than other antihistamines and starts to take effect in about one hour.

What is the Typical Allegra Dosage?

Allegra was approved by the Food and Drug administration in 1995. It is available in several different dosages. It comes in tablet, oral disintegrating tablets, and oral suspension forms:

  • Oral disintegrating tablets – 30mg (These pills contain 5.3mg of phenylalanine. Do not use this form if you have phenylketonuria.)
  • Oral Suspension – 30mg per 5mL

Your dose will depend on your weight and age. Make sure not to go over the recommended dosage for children and infants.

What is the Typical Allegra Dosage for Children?

For children, Allegra has been approved by the FDA for use in a 12-hour format in the following forms:
