About Nizoral (ketoconazole)

Ketoconazole is an antifungal medication used to treat certain fungal infections. Like other azole antifungals, ketoconazole works by stopping the growth of fungus.

Ketoconazole is used to treat athlete's foot, jock itch, ringworm, pityriasis (tinea versicolor), and other fungal infections. Ketoconazole is available only by prescription. It is available in a generic formulation as well as under different brand names, including Nizoral.

Ketoconazole may be prescribed as a tablet, shampoo, or topical cream. It’s always important to follow the specific instructions on your prescription, as they can vary based on the formulation and dosage prescribed.

If you're prescribed ketoconazole, be sure to complete the full course of the antifungal treatment unless your doctor specifically tells you to stop. If you don’t complete your prescription, the antifungal may not fully treat your fungal infection.

Ketoconazole uses

There are several FDA-approved uses for ketoconazole, but your healthcare provider may also prescribe it off-label to treat other medical conditions.

Your PlushCare doctor may prescribe ketoconazole for any of the following reasons, or other reasons not listed here. If you have questions about why a medication is prescribed, ask your online doctor or pharmacist.

  • Fungal infections

Ketoconazole is FDA-approved to treat fungal infections, including athlete's foot, jock itch, ringworm, and certain types of dandruff. Ketoconazole is also used to treat a fungal skin infection called pityriasis (tinea versicolor), which causes lightening and darkening of the neck, chest, arms, or legs.

Ketoconazole is not recommended for fungal infections of the fingernails or toenails. It's also not suitable for treating prostate cancer or Cushing syndrome.

Ketoconazole side effects

  • The side effects associated with taking Ketoconazole are typically mild. Most Ketoconazole side effects are associated with gastrointestinal discomfort.

Ketoconazole has some common side effects. Possible side effects may include:

    • Nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain

Other side effects, which are less common but might be more severe, could include:

    • Fast or pounding heartbeats

    • Unusual weakness or tiredness

    • Signs of liver problems

You should call your doctor if you notice any adverse effects, or if you develop any other new or concerning symptoms. Ketoconazole tablets can cause serious harm to your liver, which may cause liver damage or death.

Ketoconazole shampoo and ketoconazole cream can be used by children over 12 years of age.

How to take Ketoconazole

Your pharmacist will provide you with instructions on how to take your Ketoconazole prescription. Be sure to read your prescription label and follow the instructions. Call your doctor or pharmacy if you have any questions.

Ketoconazole can come in different forms and doses, so follow the specific instructions on your prescription. Your doctor will perform blood tests to ensure ketoconazole is safe for you.
