About Aimovig (Erenumab)

Aimovig is considered a calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) antagonist, which functions by binding to brain cell receptors that are responsible for migraine actions. Like any calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) antagonist, this medication can only treat migraines. Aimovig is not effective against brain tumors and cancers.

Aimovig is effective for both acute and persistent migraine headache prevention. People who have more events of migraine in a month can use this drug on a doctor's prescription. If you experience monthly migraine days of 4 or higher, ask your doctor about prescribing Aimovig for migraine prevention.

Aimovig is available only by prescription. Aimovig is prescribed medication licensed by the FDA for migraine prevention in adults. This medicine is known as Erenumab under the name Aimovig (brand). It has other common names, such as AMG-334 and Erenumab-Aooe.

Amiovig comes in the following form:

  • Prefilled syringes

  • Prefilled pens

It’s always important to follow the specific instructions on your prescription, as they can vary based on the formulation and dosage you are prescribed. Amiovig has no generic form, so it is unavailable in tablet or pill form.

It's essential to always abide by the specific recommendations on your prescription. They can change depending on the formulation and amount.

Amiovig's prescription is essential for you. If prescribed Aimovig, complete the entire course unless your doctor specifically tells you to stop.

Amiovig may only fully treat your migraine if you complete your prescription.

Aimovig uses

There is one FDA-approved use for Aimovig, but it may also be used off-label to treat other conditions. Ask your online doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about why a medication is prescribed.

  • Migraines

The FDA has approved the Amiovig medicine for treating episodic or chronic migraines in adults. Patients frequently report episodic or chronic migraine pain as pounding or throbbing at a particular spot in the head.

As migraine prevention, Amiovig blocks the activity of CGRP and reduces the number of migraine days.

Your online medical professional may prescribe it for the following common reason. It's also possible that your healthcare provider may prescribe it for other reasons not listed here. Ask your online doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about why a medication is prescribed.

  • Ordinary headaches

The FDA has not approved the use of Amiovig for ordinary headaches. You can only use this medicine after consulting your pharmacist or physician.

Aimovig side effects

  • The possible side effects associated with taking Aimovig are typically mild. The most common adverse reactions reported are constipation and allergic reactions at the injection site. The most common side effects may include:

    • Injection site reactions such as allergic reactions, skin rash, redness, pain, and swelling

    • Constipation

    • Cramps

    • Muscle spasms

In rare cases, Amiovig may cause serious and adverse side effects, such as:

    • Serious allergic reactions

    • High blood pressure

    • Constipation with serious complications

You should call your doctor if you notice any of these possible side effects or develop any other new or concerning symptoms. Taking Aimovigin young children under age 18 is not advised. FDA does not approve it because it may cause harmful effects that are still unknown.

How to take Aimovig

Your pharmacist will provide you with instructions on how to take your Aimovig prescription.

Be sure to read your prescription label and follow the instructions. Call your doctor or pharmacy if you have any questions.

According to the FDA, Aimovig can come in the following self-administering injection forms and doses:

  • 70 mg/mL OR 140 mg/mL — single-dose prefilled autoinjector

  • 70 mg/mL OR 140 mg/mL — single-dose prefilled syringe

Please be sure to follow the specific instructions on your prescription when you administer the injection yourself.

According to the FDA and AMGEN (the manufacturer of AIMOVIG), here are the general administration instructions:

  • Store the autoinjector in the refrigerator at 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C).

  • You can just take it out to reach room temperature before use.

  • Use alcohol wipes to disinfect the injection site on the skin.

  • Administer AIMOVIG in the thigh, abdomen, or upper arm.

  • Create a firm surface for the injection by stretching or pinching the skin at the injection site.

  • Properly dispose of the autoinjector.

Refer to the FDA and AMGEN for complete and detailed instructions on the proper administration of AIMOVIG treatment.

Adults are given 75 mg of Aimovig one time a month. However, 140 mg may also be given depending upon the patient's condition. This medicine is not FDA-approved for children, so it is better to consult a doctor before using it.

What to avoid while taking Aimovig

Aimovig has no known drug interactions. Don’t change what you take without checking with your doctor or pharmacist. That includes other medications or supplements, as well as over-the-counter drugs.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist if it is acceptable to consume alcohol while taking Aimovig.

It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you are on when taking Aimovig.

During pregnancy, consult your physician before using Aimovig, as it may affect the unborn baby.

Medication alternatives to Aimovig

If your healthcare provider prefers to put you on another treatment, they may suggest another CGRP, such as Ajovy (fremanezumab-vfrm) or a beta-blocker. Here are some common doctor-recommended alternatives based on your health issue.

  • Migraine headaches

Like Aimovig, these alternatives can help reduce your migraine days.

    • Emgality (galcanezumab-gnlm) - can be used to treat ordinary and chronic/episodic migraine headaches in adults.

    • Ajovy (fremanezumab-vfrm) - treatment of chronic/episodic migraine headaches in older people. It is also available in injection form.

    • Vyepti (eptinezumab-jjmr) - is also an antagonist of CGRP and relieves adult chronic/episodic migraine headaches.
