Chantix (varenicline) prescription FAQs

  • Can you still buy Chantix?

Although the brand name Chantix is no longer available due to the nationwide recall, its generic, varenicline, is available by prescription. Book an appointment with one of our top rated doctors online to discuss varenicline to help you stop smoking.

  • Can you buy Chantix online?

You can book an appointment to request a prescription for varenicline, the generic version of Chantix, online with one of our top-rated doctors. During your appointment, you will speak to a doctor from your smartphone or computer, and they will evaluate your symptoms and medical history. If you qualify, they will send the prescription to your local pharmacy for pickup.

  • How does Chantix work?

Varenicline is a partial cholinergic nicotinic agonist, which works by stimulating nicotine receptors in the brain, reducing cigarette cravings. It also can decrease the pleasurable effects of smoking.

  • What replaced Chantix?

Chantix's generic, varenicline, is still available via prescription from a board-certified doctor. Ask one of our board-certified doctors about varenicline to help you quit smoking.

  • How much does Chantix cost?

The price for a 56-tablet supply of varenicline oral tablet 1 mg is around $150. The 0.5 mg tablet is around the same price. Keep in mind these will vary based on insurance and the refilling pharmacy.

  • How can I refill my Chantix prescription?

You will need to speak to a board-certified doctor to refill varenicline, as it is only available by prescription. If prescribed, one of our doctors can send the prescription refill to your local pharmacy for pickup.

  • How long does it take for Chantix to kick in?

Chantix can start to work as soon as a couple of weeks. For example, many people in clinical trials quit smoking by week 12.

  • What happens if you continue to smoke on Chantix?

Chantix is a medication that helps ease withdrawal symptoms by mimicking nicotine and blocking its binding to receptors to encourage the patient to quit smoking. Smoking while taking Chantix will not have any adverse reactions. However, trying to stop smoking or setting a quit date before taking Chantix is best.

Smoking is less effective because there's no boost in your body from regular cigarettes; this makes smoking bland at best for those who take them.

The typical schedule for taking varenicline is one pill in the morning and one at night to stop smoking. If varenicline upsets your stomach, take it after a meal or with milk.

    • Dalfampridine

    • Trouble breathing

    • Rash, with peeling skin

  • What happens if I take too much Chantix?

As with any prescription medication, if you take too much Chantix, call your healthcare provider or local Poison Control Center or seek emergency medical help immediately.

About Chantix (varenicline)

Chantix (varenicline) is considered a partial cholinergic nicotinic agonist, which stimulates nicotine receptors in the brain, reducing cigarette cravings. It also decreases the pleasurable effects of cigarettes.

Like any partial cholinergic nicotinic agonist, you can only use it to quit smoking tobacco. It is ineffective against other types of smoking because it only reduces nicotine cravings.

Some conditions that varenicline is known to treat include nicotine withdrawal and smoking cessation. Although the brand name Chantix is no longer available due to the nationwide recall, the generic, varenicline, is still available, only by prescription.

Varenicline may be prescribed as capsules. It’s always important to follow the specific instructions on your prescription, as they can vary based on the formulation and dosage prescribed.

If prescribed varenicline, complete the partial cholinergic nicotinic agonist course unless your doctor specifically tells you to stop.

The partial cholinergic nicotinic agonist may not fully treat your nicotine withdrawal symptoms if you don't complete your prescription.

Varenicline uses

There is one FDA-approved use for varenicline, but physicians may also use it off-label to treat other conditions. Your online medical professional may prescribe it for the following reasons.

It’s also possible that your healthcare provider may prescribe it for other reasons not listed here. Ask your online doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about why they prescribed you a medication.

  • Quitting smoking

Varenicline helps with quitting smoking by reducing the pleasure of smoking. It also helps with nicotine withdrawal.
