Zetia prescription FAQs

  • How much does Zetia cost?

Depending on your pharmacy, Zetia oral tablets cost around $391 for a 30-day supply of 10 mg tablets without health insurance. Fortunately, generic brands, such as ezetimibe, offer an affordable alternative.

  • How can I refill my Zetia prescription?

To refill your Zetia prescription, book a virtual appointment with one of our top rated board-certified doctors. After reviewing your symptoms and medical history, your doctor can send an electronic prescription to your local pharmacy.

  • Who should not take Zetia?

Avoid taking Zetia if you have certain medical conditions, such as active liver disease or severe renal impairment. Tell your doctor if you have active liver disease and are also taking statin medication.

If your doctor tells you to stop taking Zetia, do not flush medications. Instead, talk to your pharmacist or local waste disposal company to properly dispose of prescription drugs.

  • What happens if I miss a dose of Zetia?

If you miss a dose of Zetia, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, you should skip the missed dose if it's almost time for the next dose. Avoid taking two doses to make up for the missed dose.

  • What happens if I take too much Zetia?

If you've taken more than one dose of Zetia, call your doctor or local poison control center. If you have severe symptoms, such as unexplained muscle pain, seek emergency medical help.

  • What are the benefits of Zetia?

Zetia helps lower cholesterol in the blood. If you have elevated total cholesterol or LDL, Zetia treatment can help lower your risk of heart attack and stroke.

  • How does Zetia work?

Zetia reduces cholesterol in the blood by reducing the cholesterol your body can absorb.

About Zetia

Zetia (ezetimibe), a cholesterol absorption inhibitor, helps reduce total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol in the blood. Zetia is prescribed to treat high cholesterol in people who cannot control their cholesterol levels through diet and exercise alone.

Zetia treats high cholesterol by reducing the amount of cholesterol the body absorbs. It can help treat mixed hyperlipidemia, homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, and homozygous sitosterolemia.

Zetia is available only by prescription. It is available in a generic formulation as well as under different brand names, including ezetimibe.

Zetia may be prescribed in tablet form. It’s always important to follow the specific instructions on your prescription, as they can vary based on the formulation and dosage prescribed.

If you're prescribed Zetia, be sure to complete the full course of the cholesterol absorption inhibitor unless your doctor specifically tells you to stop. If you don't take your medication regularly, the lipid-lowering treatment may not fully treat your high cholesterol.

Zetia uses

There are several FDA-approved uses for Zetia, but your healthcare provider may also prescribe it off-label to treat other medical conditions.

Your doctor may prescribe Zetia for any of the following reasons, or other reasons not listed here. If you have questions about why a medication is prescribed, ask your online doctor or pharmacist.

  • High cholesterol

Zetia is FDA-approved to treat high cholesterol in people with mixed hyperlipidemia, homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, and homozygous sitosterolemia in adults and children 10 years and older.

Zetia side effects

  • The side effects associated with taking Zetia are typically mild. Individuals taking Zetia report a variety of side effects, and side effects may vary from patient to patient.

The side effects of Zetia may include:

    • Pain in your arms or legs

    • Upper respiratory infections

    • Joint pain

    • Muscle pain

    • Diarrhea

Other side effects, which are less common but might be more severe, could include the following symptoms:

    • Severe dizziness and/or nausea

    • Dark urine

    • Unusual tiredness

    • Fever, rash, or sore throat

    • Allergic reactions

    • Liver disease

You should call your healthcare professional if you notice any adverse effects or if you develop any other new or serious symptoms.

How to take Zetia

Your pharmacist will provide you with instructions on how to take your prescription. Be sure to read your prescription label and follow the instructions. Call your healthcare professional or pharmacy if you have any questions.

Zetia can be taken with or without food. It is available in 10 mg tablets and is usually taken as one tablet once a day.

What to avoid while taking Zetia

Zetia has several drug interactions. Don’t change what you take without discussing your medical history and possible drug interactions with your doctor or pharmacist. That includes prescription and nonprescription drugs, supplements, and other drugs.

Some cholesterol medications and blood thinner medications have possible drug interactions with Zetia. You should wait 4 hours after taking Zetia to take any of the following medications:

  • Welchol (colesevelam)

  • Questran (cholestyramine)

  • Colestid (colestipol)

Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice if you're taking Zetia with statin medication. Grapefruit can affect your body's ability to break down statins, increasing your risk of adverse reactions.

If you take Zetia with a statin drug (combination therapy), you may have an increased risk of liver disease. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about alcohol consumption while taking Zetia.

Medication alternatives to Zetia

Suppose your healthcare provider prefers to put you on another treatment. In that case, they may suggest other lipid-lowering treatments or another cholesterol medication in another drug class, such as a statin agent. Here are some common doctor-recommended alternatives based on your health issue:
