About Levitra (vardenafil)

Levitra is a selective inhibitor of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP)-specific phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5). In combination with sexual stimulation, Levitra helps increase blood flow to the penis so men can get and maintain erections.

Levitra is used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence). Levitra is available only by prescription. It's available in a generic formulation as well as under different brand names, including vardenafil.

Levitra may be prescribed as a tablet. It’s always important to follow the specific instructions on your prescription, as they can vary based on the formulation and dosage prescribed.

If you're prescribed Levitra, be sure to complete the full course of PDE5 inhibitors unless your doctor specifically tells you to stop. If you don’t complete your prescription, Levitra may not fully treat erectile dysfunction (ED).

Levitra uses

There is one FDA-approved use for Levitra, but your healthcare provider may also prescribe it off-label to treat other medical conditions.

Your doctor may prescribe Levitra for any of the following reasons, or other reasons not listed here. If you have questions about why a medication is prescribed, ask your online doctor or pharmacist.

  • Erectile dysfunction (ED)

Levitra is FDA-approved to treat erectile dysfunction. It relaxes the muscles found in the walls of blood vessels and increases blood flow to the penis.

Levitra side effects

  • The side effects associated with taking Levitra are typically mild. Most Levitra side effects are associated with flushing.

Levitra has some common side effects. They may include:

    • Flushing (warmth, redness, or tingling sensation)

    • Sinus pain

    • Upset stomach

    • Back pain

    • Headache or dizziness

Other side effects, which are less common but might be more severe, could include:

    • Painful or prolonged erection (longer than four hours)

    • Heart attack symptoms, such as chest pain

    • Abnormal vision or sudden vision loss

    • Shortness of breath

    • Severe dizziness

You should call your doctor if you notice any of these side effects, or if you develop any other new or concerning symptoms. The use of Levitra is not recommended in children.

How to take Levitra

Your pharmacist will provide you with instructions on how to take your Levitra prescription. Be sure to read your prescription label and follow the instructions. Call your doctor or pharmacy if you have any questions.

Levitra can come in different doses, so be sure to follow the specific instructions on your prescription. The starting dose of Levitra is typically 10 mg orally, once daily as needed, approximately 60 minutes before sexual activity.

What to avoid while taking Levitra

Levitra has 448 drug interactions. Don’t change what you are taking without checking with your doctor or pharmacist. That includes other medications, supplements, and nonprescription drugs.

Possible drug interactions with Levitra include:

  • Antibiotics and antifungal prescription drugs

  • Prescription drugs used to treat high blood pressure or prostate disorder

  • Heart rhythm medicine

  • HIV/AIDs medicine

Avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while taking Levitra unless your doctor says it's safe to do so. Grapefruit can increase the risk of side effects with this medication.

Levitra can lower blood pressure, and alcohol can further increase this effect. Avoid or limit the use of alcohol while taking Levitra and use caution when getting up from a sitting or lying position.

Medication alternatives to Levitra

If your healthcare provider prefers to put you on another treatment altogether, they may suggest another PDE5 inhibitor or erectile dysfunction medication in another drug class. Here are some common doctor-recommended alternatives based on your health issue:
