About Capoten
Capoten is considered an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACE inhibitor). Capoten is used to treat high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, and diabetic nephropathy, as well as to improve survival chances after a heart attack.
Capoten is available only by prescription. It is available in a generic formulation as well as under different brand names, including captopril.
Capoten may be prescribed as a tablet. It’s always important to follow the specific instructions on your prescription, as they can vary based on the formulation and dosage prescribed.
If you're prescribed Capoten, be sure to complete the full course of the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to stop. If you don’t complete your prescription, the ACE inhibitor may not fully treat your high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, or diabetic nephropathy (kidney disease).
Capoten uses
There are several FDA-approved uses for Capoten, but your healthcare provider may also prescribe it off-label to treat other medical conditions.
Your doctor may prescribe Capoten for any of the following reasons, or other reasons not listed here. If you have questions about why a medication is prescribed, ask your online doctor or pharmacist.
High Blood Pressure
Capoten is FDA-approved to treat high blood pressure in adults with normal renal function. It may be used alone or with thiazide antihypertensives for additional blood pressure-lowering effects.
Heart disease management
Capoten is FDA-approved to treat congestive heart failure, usually in combination with diuretics and digitalis. It can also help improve survival in patients with left ventricular dysfunction after myocardial infarction.
Diabetic nephropathy
Capoten is FDA-approved to treat diabetic nephropathy in patients with insulin-dependent type 1 diabetes mellitus. Capoten decreases the rate of progression of renal insufficiency.
Capoten side effects
The side effects associated with taking Capoten are typically mild. Common side effects of Capoten include:
Cough
Flushing (warmth, redness, or tingling feeling)
Loss of taste
Other side effects, which are less common but might be more severe, could include:Lightheadedness
Shortness of breath
Chest pain or irregular heartbeat
Tell your doctor if you notice any of these side effects, or if you develop any other new or concerning symptoms. Capoten may be also used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure in children.
How to take Capoten
Your pharmacist will provide you with instructions on how to take your Capoten prescription. Be sure to read your prescription label and follow the instructions. Call your doctor or pharmacy if you have any questions.
Capoten can come in different doses, so be sure to follow the specific instructions on your prescription. The initial Capoten dosage for hypertension is typically 12.5–25 mg. Capoten dosage may range from 6.25 to 12.5 mg for heart failure and up to 25 mg for diabetic nephropathy.
Capoten is usually taken one hour before meals. Be sure to drink plenty of water when taking this medication.
What to avoid while taking Capoten
Capoten has 379 drug interactions. Don’t change what you are taking without checking with your doctor or pharmacist. That includes other medications or supplements, as well as over-the-counter drugs.
Possible drug interactions with Capoten include:
Cardizem (diltiazem)
Lasix (furosemide)
Lopressor (metoprolol)
Paracetamol (acetaminophen)
Plavix (clopidogrel)
Alcohol may further lower blood pressure and increase adverse reactions to Capoten. Ask your doctor for medical advice before drinking alcohol.
Avoid using salt substitutes or potassium supplements while taking this medication unless your doctor has told you to.
Medication alternatives to Capoten
If your healthcare professional prefers to put you on another treatment altogether, they may suggest other ACE inhibitors or antihypertensives in another drug class. Here are some common doctor-recommended alternatives based on your health issue:
High blood pressure
Congestive heart failure
Diabetic nephropathy
Fortamet (metformin)
Avapro (irbesartan)
Prinivil (lisinopril)
