About Zyloprim (allopurinol)

Zyloprim is considered a xanthine oxidase inhibitor, which functions by blocking the enzyme responsible for the metabolism of xanthine to the production of uric acid. The prevention of this reaction prevents the buildup of uric acid levels that causes gout.

Like any xanthine oxidase inhibitor, this medication is only meant to be used for a limited period of time, and the patient must be re-evaluated before discontinuing the drug.

Some conditions that Zyloprim is known to treat include gout, elevated levels of uric acid in the body (usually caused by certain cancers and cancer treatments), and kidney stones. Other conditions include:

  • Vitamin B12 deficiency

  • Rheumatoid arthritis

  • Gout-related bone disorders

Zyloprim is available only by prescription. It is available in a generic formulation as allopurinol, as well as under different brand names, including Altacoron, Xyloprim, Neuroplat, and Radodyl, among others.

Zyloprim may be prescribed as a once-daily tablet. Zyloprim should not be taken with other medications that interfere with the absorption of uric acid, such as methotrexate or sulfasalazine, because it may lead to low uric acid levels. It’s always important to follow the specific instructions on your prescription, as they can vary based on the formulation and dosage that you are prescribed.

If you are prescribed Zyloprim, be sure to complete the full course of the xanthine oxidase inhibitor unless your doctor specifically tells you to stop. If you don’t complete your prescription, the xanthine oxidase inhibitor may not fully treat your condition.

Zyloprim uses

There are many FDA-approved uses for Zyloprim, but it may also be used off-label to treat other conditions. Your online medical professional may prescribe it for any of the following common reasons. It’s also possible that your doctor may prescribe it for other reasons not listed here. If you have questions about why a medication is prescribed, ask your online doctor or pharmacist.

  • Gout

A common FDA-approved use for Zyloprim is to treat gout.

Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis. Gout attacks are known to be one of the most painful forms of arthritis, characterized by excruciating attacks that occur suddenly in a single joint – frequently in the middle of the night. The most commonly affected joint is the big toe, but gout is also seen in the ankles, knees, wrists, and hands.

Zyloprim functions by blocking the enzyme responsible for the metabolism of xanthine to the production of uric acid. This prevents the buildup of uric acid levels in people with increased uric acid levels, often caused by certain cancers and cancer treatments, as well as other drugs.

How to take Zyloprim

Your pharmacist will provide you with instructions on how to take your Zyloprim prescription for your allopurinol treatment.

Be sure to read your prescription label and follow the instructions. Call your doctor or pharmacy if you have any questions.

Zyloprim is administered in oral form. It is usually taken at least once daily at the same time every day, or based on the medical guidelines provided by your doctor. In order to reduce the incidence of upset stomach, Zyloprim should be taken after a meal. If your dose happens to be more than 300 milligrams a day, you will have to take several smaller doses during the day.

The typical dose is 100 to 200 milligrams a day. It is important to drink water when using this medication. Each dose should be taken with a full glass of water in addition to at least 8 more glasses a day. If there is a medical reason for you to drink less water, please consult your doctor for more instructions. There are also other preventive measures that you may be instructed to do in order to decrease uric acid levels in your urine.

Some specific instructions may include:

  1. Do not exceed the recommended dose. Do not take more than specified amount or Zyloprim will lose its effectiveness and may cause side effects.

  2. If you take Zyloprim with food, especially cold foods, drink a small amount of water 30 minutes before taking Zyloprim.

The dosage prescribed to you will be based on your particular medical condition and response to treatment. It is crucial that you use the medication according to your doctor's prescription guidelines.

If you are taking the medication for gout, it may take up to several weeks before this medicine has an effect. While the body seeks to remove excess uric acid, it is not uncommon for you to experience more gout attacks for several months while on this medication.

Dosages might be adjusted for certain patients. Always follow the directions given by your doctor and the instructions on the prescription label.

Before taking Zyloprim (allopurinol), it is important to tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have ever had a severe reaction to it in the past, or have any other allergies. This product may contain certain inactive ingredients that can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist for more details.

Your doctor should be informed about your medical history before prescribing this medication. This is especially true if you have suffered any of the following:

  • Kidney or liver disease

  • Diabetes

  • High blood pressure (hypertension)

  • Unusual diets (e.g., fasting)

Zyloprim (allopurinol) may make you drowsy. The use of alcohol or marijuana can worsen the condition. When taking Zyloprim (allopurinol), avoid operating any machinery, driving, or performing any task that requires alertness. The use of alcohol may also decrease the potential effectiveness of this drug; therefore, please limit alcohol consumption when taking this medication. Some research shows that regular alcohol consumption may increase the risk of kidney failure in people who have congestive heart failure. Regular alcohol consumption also negatively affects liver function.

Older adults may be at increased risk of side effects when using this drug. This is because as kidney function declines with age, it may be less effective at removing Zyloprim from the system.

Pregnant patients should discuss the risk and benefits of taking Zyloprim with your doctor. Zyloprim has the ability to pass into breast milk; nursing patients should consult their doctor before breastfeeding.
