About Zaroxolyn (metolazone)

Zaroxolyn is a diuretic (water pill) that increases urination, which helps the body get rid of excess water. Zaroxolyn is used to treat high blood pressure and fluid retention (edema) associated with congestive heart failure or kidney disease.

Zaroxolyn is available only by prescription. It is available in a generic formulation as well as under different brand names, including metolazone.

Zaroxolyn may be prescribed as a tablet. It’s always important to follow the specific instructions on your prescription, as they can vary based on the formulation and dosage prescribed.

If you're prescribed Zaroxolyn, be sure to complete the full course of the diuretic unless your doctor specifically tells you to stop. If you don’t complete your prescription, the water pill may not fully treat your high blood pressure or fluid retention.

Zaroxolyn uses

There are several FDA-approved uses for Zaroxolyn, but your physician may also prescribe it off-label to treat other medical conditions.

Your doctor may prescribe Zaroxolyn for any of the following reasons, or other reasons not listed here. If you have questions about why a medication is prescribed, ask your online doctor or pharmacist.

  • High blood pressure

Zaroxolyn is FDA-approved to treat high blood pressure alone or with other antihypertensive drugs. Lowering blood pressure can help reduce the risk of strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems.

  • Edema (fluid retention)

Zaroxolyn is FDA-approved to treat fluid retention associated with congestive heart failure or renal disease, including a kidney disorder known as nephrotic syndrome.

How to take Zaroxolyn
