About Condylox (podofilox)

Condylox is considered an antimitotic drug, which stops the growth of warts, eventually causing them to fall off. Podofilox is usually prescribed as an external topical solution.

Some conditions that Condylox is known to treat include genital warts and anal warts. Condylox is available only by prescription. It is available in a generic formulation known as podofilox.

It’s always important to follow the specific instructions on your prescription, as they can vary based on the formulation and dosage that you are prescribed.

If you are prescribed Condylox, be sure to complete the full course of medication as prescribed unless your doctor specifically tells you to stop. If you don’t complete your prescription, Condylox may not fully treat your anal or genital warts.

Condylox uses

Condylox is FDA-approved to treat anal and genital warts but may be prescribed off-label by your doctor to treat other conditions. It’s possible that your health care professional may prescribe it for other reasons not listed here. If you have questions about why a medication is prescribed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

  • Anal or genital warts

Condylox is used to treat external genital warts and perianal warts. This may include those caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). Condylox gel is for external use only and should be applied using the applicator to minimize exposure to the surrounding healthy skin. Properly discard of used applicators.

Condylox side effects

  • The side effects associated with taking Condylox are typically mild and minor. Most Condylox side effects are associated with mild skin irritation. Common Condylox side effects may include:

    • Headache

    • Burning, itching, pain, or redness on treated skin

    • Unpleasant skin odor

Other side effects, which are less common but might be more severe, could include:

    • Swelling

    • Bleeding

    • Signs of an allergic reaction like hives, itching, red, blistered, or peeling skin

You should call your doctor for medical advice about side effects if you experience severe irritation or develop any other new or concerning symptoms.

How to take Condylox

Your pharmacist will provide you with instructions on how to take your Condylox prescription.

Be sure to read your prescription label and follow the instructions. Call your doctor or pharmacy if you have any questions.

Condylox can come in different forms and doses, so be sure to follow the specific instructions on your prescription. It is typically prescribed for application twice daily (morning and evening) for three days in a row, followed by holding off for four days. This cycle may be repeated up to four times until there is no visible wart tissue.

Some specific instructions may include: do not take this drug by mouth, keep away from flame as this drug may catch fire, do not get this drug in your eyes, wash your hands before and after use, and use only on warts as you have been instructed by your doctor. Dispose of the used applicator after each use.

What to avoid while taking Condylox

Condylox has some drug interactions. Don’t change what you are taking without checking with your doctor or pharmacist. That includes other medications or supplements, as well as over-the-counter drugs.

Avoid contact with eyes. If this product comes in contact with your eyes, flush your eyes with water and seek medical attention or call your local poison control center immediately.

It is important to tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan on getting pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Condylox should not be used during pregnancy.

Medication alternatives to Condylox

If your clinician prefers to put you on an alternative treatment altogether, they may suggest another antimitotic drug or a topical skin product in another drug class. Here are some common doctor-recommended alternatives based on your health issue:

  • Genital or perianal warts

    Imiquimod cream

    Sinecatechins ointment

  • Molluscum contagiosum

    Nitric oxide releasing berdazimer gel

    Salicylic acid gel

    Phenol solution
