Bumex prescription FAQs

  • How much does Bumex cost?

Compared to its brand name, Bumetanide (Bumex) is significantly cheaper than a generic. Generic medications will be more cost-effective unless you have a specific need for the brand. A supply of 30 bumetanide oral tablets 1 mg costs about $22, depending on the pharmacy.

  • How can I refill my Bumex prescription?

Follow the instructions for refilling your Bumex prescription from your healthcare provider. You can refill your Bumex prescription online with PlushCare.

Our doctors can refill your prescription online if you qualify. Simply book an appointment with one of our doctors, attend the visit with one of our clinicians on your phone or computer, and then they can electronically send a refill to your nearest pharmacy.

  • Who should not take Bumex?

The manufacturer states that you should not take Bumex if you are pregnant or breast feeding. Consult your doctor if you have liver disease, cirrhosis, severe allergic reactions, or severe dehydration; Bumetanide isn't recommended.

  • What labs should be monitored when taking Bumex?

If you have to take Bumex, the following labs need to be monitored under the guidance of healthcare professional:

    • Blood electrolytes (sodium and potassium)

    • Urine specific gravity

    • Blood creatinine

    • Blood urea nitrogen (BUN)

    • Blood uric acid

  • Should Bumex be taken on an empty stomach?

If you take Bumex, it is recommended that you take it with food. The ingredients in Bumex are safe for consumption and have no side effects when taken with food. It is not recommended to take a supplement on an empty stomach if you have a medical condition or illness that makes it unsafe for you to eat. Consult your doctor about the best way to treat your condition while taking Bumex if this occurs.

  • Does Bumex affect blood pressure?

Bumex is a medication that acts as a diuretic (water pills) by removing excess fluid from the body. However, it can also cause low blood pressure and dehydration as a strong diuretic.

  • What happens if I miss a dose of Bumex?

If you have missed a dose, you should take it as soon as you remember. The only exception is if you are almost due for your next dose. In this case, be sure to skip your missed dose and continue to take your next dose following your regular dosing schedule. To compensate for missing a dose, don't double it.

  • What happens if I take too much Bumex?

It is essential to understand that taking too much Bumetanide or taking it too often can cause severe fluid loss, reduction in blood volume, dehydration, electrolyte depletion, and circulatory collapse (with symptoms such as dizziness, confusion, weakness, anorexia, cramps, lethargy, and vomiting). If you take too much Bumex contact your local poison control center or your doctor for medical advice.

About Bumex

Bumex is considered a loop diuretic, which functions by inhibiting the reabsorption of sodium and chloride. As a result, more water and electrolytes are excreted from the body. Simply put, your body makes more urine. Like any Inhalant, this medication can only be used for the duration prescribed by the doctor. Please do not take it at random intervals; follow the directions strictly. It is ineffective against high or untreatable blood pressure because it will not work unless given in high doses.

Some conditions that Bumex treats include Edema (fluid retention in body tissues) due to medical problems such as heart, liver, and kidney disease.

Bumex is available only by prescription. It is available in a generic formulation under the Bumex generic name bumetanide.

Bumex may be prescribed as a tablet or an injectable form. The usual adult dose of Bumex is from 0.5 to 2 mg daily by mouth or intravenously (into a vein). It's always important to follow the specific instructions on your prescription, as they can vary based on the formulation and dosage you are prescribed.

If you are prescribed Bumex, be sure to complete the entire course of the loop diuretic unless your doctor specifically tells you to stop.

If you don't complete your prescription, the medication may not fully treat your condition, and the edema (fluid retention in body tissues) may return.

Bumex uses

There are multipleFDA-approved uses for Bumex, but you may also use it off-label to treat other conditions. Your online medical professional may prescribe it for the following reasons. Your healthcare provider may also prescribe other reasons. Ask your online doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about why a medication is prescribed.

  • Edema

Bumex is approved for the treatment of adults with edema. Edema is a condition in which there is a buildup of fluid in the body that presses on the tissue and causes it to swell. The swelling can be caused by many things, including congestive heart failure, kidney disease, or severe burns.

Bumex helps reduce edema by helping your body get rid of excess fluids that are building up in your tissues. It can help improve circulation and reduce swelling around your heart, kidneys, liver, lungs, and other organs.

  • High blood pressure

It treats high blood pressure (hypertension). It works by relaxing the muscle in the walls of your arteries and veins to help lower your blood pressure. If you have high blood pressure, you may experience shortness of breath while taking Bumex, called orthostatic hypotension. It is most often mild and doesn't interfere with treatment.

  • Kidney problems

Bumex has also been shown to help improve kidney function in those with kidney problems. It is because it helps to increase blood flow to the kidneys, which allows them to work more efficiently and effectively than they would otherwise be able to do. It can reduce symptoms associated with kidney failures, such as painful urination and fatigue, and the time it takes before recovery begins when suffering from this condition.

  • Heart failure

Heart failure is when the heart can no longer pump enough blood to meet the body's needs. In this situation, fluid builds up in the lungs and other tissues (Edema). Bumex may be used to treat heart failure if you have symptoms such as

    • shortness of breath while walking up or down stairs;

    • swelling in your feet or legs;

    • extreme tiredness;

    • frequent urination; or

    • swelling (edema) of the feet or legs worsens when standing up for long periods (orthostatic hypotension).

Bumex side effects

  • The side effects associated with taking Bumex are typically mild and may go away after a few days of treatment. Most Bumex side effects are associated with metabolic acidosis, which is why it is important to monitor your blood bicarbonate level while taking this medication. Bumex has some common side effects. The following symptoms may occur:

    • Dizziness

    • Muscle cramps

    • Low blood pressure

    • Nausea

    • Headache

    • Dry mouth

Other side effects, which are less common but might be more severe, could include:

Symptoms of toxic epidermal necrolysis or Stevens-Johnson syndrome include severe skin reactions. The following symptoms may occur:

    • Fever

    • Allergic reactions

    • Serious skin reactions

    • Bruising

    • Blistering

    • Swelling

    • Sores

    • Blood cell count changes

    • Stomach pain

    • Difficulty getting or maintaining an erection

Talk to your doctor immediately if you notice any of these side effects or if you develop any other new or concerning symptoms. Use of Bumex in young children under age 12 is not advised because it can cause serious side effects, including death. Bumex should not be used in pregnant women at any stage due to the risk of severe congenital disabilities or other complications.

How to take Bumex

Your doctor or pharmacist will provide you with drug information and instructions on how to take your Bumex prescription.

Be sure to read your prescription label and follow the instructions. Call your doctor or pharmacy if you have any questions.

Bumex can come in different forms and doses, so follow the specific instructions on your prescription. It is typically prescribed once a day in the afternoon or morning. According to your doctor, if it is prescribed twice a day, you should take it twice daily. Some specific instructions may include:

  • You must follow the directions on the label of your prescription. Please read all medication guides and instructions provided with your prescription. Your doctor can change your dose occasionally. It is essential to take the medication exactly as directed.

  • As an injection or an infusion, Bumex injections are given into a muscle. If you cannot take the medication by mouth, a healthcare provider will administer this injection to you.

  • It may be easier for you to get dehydrated if you take Bumex because it increases urination. Get enough salt and potassium in your diet, or take potassium supplements as directed by your doctor. To maintain optimal potassium levels, your doctor may also advice that you take potassium rich foods such as banana and orange juice.

  • In the case of vomiting, diarrhea, or excessive sweating, contact your doctor. When you take Bumex, you are at risk of becoming dehydrated. An electrolyte imbalance or kidney failure can result from low blood pressure.

  • Elderly patients are recommended to start at the low end of the dosing range.

  • Medical tests will be required frequently.

  • Avoid heat, moisture, and light by storing them at room temperature.

What to avoid while taking Bumex

Take diuretic medications with caution if you are taking herbs with diuretic effects since they might enhance their effects and cause cardiovascular side effects. Dandelion, uva ursi, juniper, buchu, cleavers, horsetail, and gravel root are among them.

Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) is a plant family containing chemicals with similar effects and toxicity as digoxin. The risk of heart disturbances from loop diuretics increases. It is recommended to use loop diuretics and digitalis-containing products under medical supervision.

Don't change what you take without checking with your doctor or pharmacist. That includes other medications or supplements, as well as over-the-counter drugs. It is essential to drink plenty of fluids while taking Bumex. It will help to prevent kidney stones.

Ask your doctor if it is acceptable to consume alcohol while taking Bumex. Some research shows that regular alcohol consumption may double the risk of chronic kidney disease. Smokers who drink heavily also have an increased risk of kidney problems. Alcohol may also reduce the medication's ability to do its job, making it harder to treat high blood pressure, swollen ankles, and other symptoms of fluid retention.

Medication alternatives to Bumex

If your healthcare provider prefers to put you on another treatment, they may suggest another Furosemide (Lasix) or a loop diuretic in another drug class. Here are some common doctor-recommended alternatives based on your health issue:
