About Tofranil (imipramine)

Imipramine belongs to a class of drugs called tricyclic antidepressants, which works on your nervous system to increase the levels of certain chemicals in your brain.

Imipramine is used to treat depression. It may also be prescribed to treat bed-wetting in children older than six years old. Imipramine is available only by prescription. It is available in a generic formulation as well as under different brand names, including Tofranil.

Imipramine may be prescribed as an oral capsule or imipramine hydrochloride tablet. It’s always important to follow the specific instructions on your prescription, as they can vary based on the formulation and dosage prescribed.

If you're prescribed imipramine, be sure to complete the full course of the tricyclic antidepressant unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to stop. If you don’t complete your prescription, the tricyclic antidepressant may not fully treat your mental health condition.

Tofranil (imipramine) uses

There are several FDA-approved uses for imipramine, but it may also be used off-label to treat other conditions. Your online healthcare provider may prescribe it for any of the following common reasons. It’s also possible that your doctor may prescribe it for other reasons not listed here. If you have questions about why a medication is prescribed, ask your online doctor or pharmacist.

  • Depression

Imipramine is FDA-approved to treat depression. Like other tricyclic antidepressants, imipramine hydrochloride works on the central nervous system to improve your mood, sleep, appetite, and energy levels.

Imipramine hydrochloride may also be prescribed off-label to treat neuropathic pain and other mental health conditions, such as eating disorders and panic disorders.

  • Bed-wetting

Imipramine is FDA-approved to control nighttime bed-wetting in children older than six years old. It may work by blocking the effect of certain natural substances, such as acetylcholine, on the bladder.

Tofranil (imipramine) side effects

  • The side effects associated with taking imipramine are typically mild. Most Imipramine side effects are associated with gastrointestinal discomfort. Imipramine has some common side effects. They may include:

    • Nausea and upset stomach

    • Dry mouth

    • Breast swelling (in men and women)

Other side effects, which are less common but might be more severe, could include:

    • Easy bruising or unusual bleeding

    • Blurred vision

    • Worsening depression

    • New or worsening chest pain

You should call your doctor if you notice any adverse effects, or if you develop any other new or concerning symptoms. In rare cases, antidepressant drugs can cause a rare but serious condition called serotonin syndrome.

The use of imipramine hydrochloride is not recommended in children younger than six years old.

How to take Tofranil

Your pharmacist will provide you with instructions on how to take your imipramine prescription. Be sure to read your prescription label and follow the instructions. Call your doctor or pharmacy if you have any questions.

Imipramine can come in different forms and doses, so be sure to follow the specific instructions on your prescription. The starting dose of Tofranil for depressed patients is typically 75 mg once daily. The maintenance dose can range from 50 mg to 150 mg orally once daily.

What to avoid while taking Tofranil

Imipramine has 690 drug interactions. Don’t change what you are taking without checking with your doctor or pharmacist. That includes other prescription drugs or supplements, as well as other medications.

Possible drug interactions with imipramine hydrochloride include:

  • Other antidepressant drugs, including MAO inhibitors and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)

  • Topamax (topiramate)

  • Xanax (alprazolam)

Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Tofranil. Alcohol can increase your risk of adverse effects, such as extreme drowsiness, confusion, and agitation.

Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how imipramine affects you. Wear protective clothing and use sunscreen when you're outdoors.

Medication alternatives to Tofranil

If your healthcare provider prefers to put you on another treatment altogether, they may suggest other tricyclic antidepressants or antidepressant drugs in another drug class. Here are some common doctor-recommended alternatives based on your health issue:
