About Duricef (cefadroxil)
Duricef belongs to a class of drugs called cephalosporin antibiotics, which kill bacteria and prevent bacterial growth in the body. Duricef is ineffective against colds, flu, and viral infections like other antibiotics.
Duricef treats bacterial infections, including skin, throat, and urinary tract infections. Duricef is available only by prescription. It's available in a generic formulation under different brand names, including cefadroxil.
Duricef may be prescribed as a capsule, tablet, or powder for suspension. It's always important to follow the specific instructions on your prescription, as they can vary based on the formulation and dosage prescribed.
If you're prescribed Duricef, complete the entire course of the cephalosporin antibiotic unless your doctor specifically tells you to stop. If you don’t complete your prescription, the antibiotic treatment may not fully treat your bacterial infection.
Duricef (cefadroxil) uses
There are several FDA-approved uses for cefadroxil, but your healthcare provider may also prescribe it off-label to treat other medical conditions.
Your PlushCare doctor may prescribe cefadroxil for the following reasons or other reasons not listed here. Ask your healthcare professional or pharmacist if you have questions about why a medication is prescribed.
Skin infections
Cefadroxil is FDA-approved to treat skin and skin structure infections caused by staphylococci and/or streptococci bacteria.
Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Cefadroxil is FDA-approved to treat urinary tract infections caused by E. coli, P. mirabilis, and Klebsiella bacteria. Cefadroxil is ineffective in treating other urinary tract infections.
Pharyngitis/tonsillitis
Cefadroxil is FDA-approved to treat pharyngitis and tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A beta-hemolytic streptococci).
