About Plenity (cellulose and citric acid)

Plenity is a gastrointestinal agent class of drugs with cellulose and citric acid hydrogel as active ingredients. It can also be considered a prescription weight-loss device (not precisely a medication), which reduces appetite and uses mindful eating and exercise to help lose weight.

Like any prescription weight-loss device, this medication can only be used for treating excess weight or obesity.

Plenity is available only by prescription and is available in capsules. It’s always important to follow the specific instructions on your prescription, as they can vary based on the formulation and dosage you are prescribed.

If you are prescribed Plenity capsules, complete the entire course unless your doctor specifically tells you to stop. Plenity is effective for weight loss when combined with diet and exercise.

Plenity uses

There is one FDA-approved use for Plenity. Please don't hesitate to ask your online doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about what is prescribed.

  • Weight loss

Plenity is an FDA-cleared weight management aid. It is made from naturally derived building blocks such as cellulose and citric acid. Together with diet and exercise, Plenity prescription can form an effective weight management plan for adults with excess weight or obesity (body mass index BMI of 25 to 40 kg/m2)

Plenity side effects

  • The side effects associated with taking Plenity are typically mild to moderate. Most Plenity side effects are associated with gastrointestinal discomfort. Plenity has some common side effects. Common side effects of Plenity prescription are:

    • Diarrhea

    • Infrequent bowel movements

    • Flatulence

    • Abdominal pain

    • Bloating

Some severe but rare side effects of Plenity are:

    • Severe allergic reaction

    • Severe stomach pain

    • Severe diarrhea

You should call your doctor if you notice any of these side effects or develop other new or concerning symptoms. Use of Plenity in young children under age 12 is not advised.

How to take Plenity

Your pharmacist will provide you with instructions on how to take your Plenity prescription. Be sure to read your prescription label and follow the instructions. Call your doctor or pharmacy if you have any questions.

Plenity is made from naturally derived chemicals, cellulose and citric acid, which combine to produce a fullness sensation. Each Plenity capsule includes a large number of super absorbent hydrogel fragments.

The capsules break down in the stomach, and Plenity absorbs the water you drank and expands to occupy a quarter of your stomach, creating a feeling as if you already ate something.

On an empty stomach, three capsules are taken before lunch and dinner with water (pre-meal dose). Specifically, it is to be consumed 20 minutes before the meal.

What to avoid while taking Plenity

Currently, Plenity has no known drug interactions. However, don’t change what you take without checking with your doctor or pharmacist. That includes other medications or supplements, as well as over-the-counter drugs.

You should avoid taking Plenity if you have the following conditions:

Pregnancy

During pregnancy, it is better to avoid Plenity to avoid harmful impact on the fetus. Consult with your physician first.

Allergies

If you are allergic to the following, take Plenity with a doctor's advice.

  • Sodium stearyl sumarate

  • Citric acid

  • Titanium dioxide

  • Gelatin

  • Cellulose

Ask your doctor or pharmacist if it is acceptable to consume alcohol while taking Plenity.

Medication alternatives to Plenity

If your healthcare provider prefers to put you on another treatment, they may suggest another weight management approach or a weight loss medication in another drug class. Here are some common doctor-recommended alternatives based on your health issue:

  • Weight management in overweight and obese adults

The primary purpose is to treat alcohol dependency. The other purpose of this drug is to serve as a weight loss medication. The body absorbs this drug but not Plenity.

  • This drug is used to treat diabetes primarily. The other use of this medicine is indicated to aid weight management in adults with excess weight or obesity.

  • This medication can be prescribed to achieve clinically meaningful weight loss in obese adults with high cholesterol or BP problems.

  • Phentermine-topiramate (Qsymia)

It is also a combined drug that is primarily prescribed to reduce total body weight
